Most of us carry a few drugs in our doctor’s bag although we might not use them much. I carry about 20-25 drugs and have a list somewhere. I rely on someone from my practice to remind me when they expire and to issue me a new one.
I chanced upon this website that does the job for you. Of course, one needs to add the drugs on to it initially. It took about 20 minutes to do that and it was up and running. It is not free, unfortunately. I pay £2.99 per month. Not a big amount, but over the year that comes to about £36....I could buy a good book in that money. Maybe the iPhone edition of OHGP or BNF. However, the site paid well when it reminded me last week that my BenPen injection had expired. Imagine visiting a child with possible meningitis and not being able to give a stat injection while the ambulance arrives because the injection had expired !!!! Most of us practice in urban areas and ambulances are never far away, but for some they are.
I was able to print out a list and keep in my bag. The one advantage was the ability to also add the dose so I am not flicking through the BNF.
Lastly, a reminder email about the expired drug. Not bad at all.
Overall, I think it is a good buy.
